InkTober

Gladwin High School students and staff were all invited to participate in InkTober 2022 and they have been doing an incredible job of creating inked artwork! The official InkTober website says, “Jake Parker created InkTober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.”

GHS has joined the national challenge for 3 years in a row with over a hundred students and staff participating daily in improving their drawing skills. The goal is to physically draw with ink every day in October. You can follow the official InkTober prompt list, a different list, or come up with your own designs. Prompts include concrete things like bad dog, bouquet, farm, and scallop as well as concepts such as Uh-Oh, empty, and kind. This year the visual arts classes upped their InkTober game by creating a prize challenge for the top three inking masters. Participants who produce quality drawings can earn up to 2 pts per day with the top three point earners winning professional quality pen sets!

As part of the challenge, students learned about and used India ink to create “splat creatures” based off the book “Splats” by Simon Crack. They also took a short walking field trip, toured, and did open air drawings at the Wykoff families Halloween themed yard on 1st street in Gladwin. Lastly, if you visit the art room you will see TONS of inking options for students to use while growing their skills. From white ink on dark papers, gel pens, felt tip markers, and fine liners they have fantastic options for trying new things and are always looking to add more pen donations to the collection! If you’re in the school during October and into November, check out the display boards and see all of the incredible artwork being created at GHS!
